Kaddafi troops using cluster bombs to attack opposition

Kaddafi supporting troops accused of using forbidden cluster bombs, to stifle opposition fighters in the town of Misrata. However, Kaddafi government denies these allegations.

Through its website, the international organization Human Rights Watch (HRW), headquartered in New York, USA, issued a statement on the use of these weapons, on Friday, after the HRW observers present in Misrata, some areas still controlled by the opposition.


According to HRW, the uses of these bombs known from the evidence of bomb fragments and from interviews with residents and the opposition.

HRW condemned the use of cluster bombs because the bombs were endangering civilians.

Instead, the government denied Kaddafi. "Prove the accusations," said government spokesperson Ibrahim Mussa.

In these sites, HRW provides evidence photographs of bomb fragments that otherwise has been found in certain parts of town Misrata, who attacked with bombs and cannon by Kaddafi forces since last month. From this evidence can be identify that were MAT-120 mortars, 120 mm size made in Spain.

The workings of the bomb thrower were fire with mortars. Following is above the target area, mortars broke into 21 small bombs that spread widely. Small bombs exploded and then spread the projectiles in all directions when on any kind, whether human or inanimate objects.

The bomb was considered very dangerous type of civilians because it is uncontrollable, and spread.

Because of the nature of that kind of bomb, in 2008 created an international agreement on banning the use of Cluster Munitions in Dublin, Ireland. 108 countries agreed on the convention. However, Libya did not sign the convention, as well as U.S., Israel, Russia, and China
