Mermaid body found – could it be true? The show examines a fictional story in which a mermaid body is discovered and filmed documentary style.
While the documentary didn't prove the existence of the legendary sea creatures, half-human, half-fish, it's creators claim their findings make a strong case for the existence of mermaids.
"Beginning of the show: Do mermaids exist? The documentary also features amateur video, photographic evidence such as photos taken by two boys with a cell phone in Washington State and audio recording that suggest mermaids exist. “Many events in the show have occurred — i.e. the whale beachings, Navy experimental sonar testing, The Bloop…”
To add to it's credibility, the documentary presents the "Aquatic Ape Theory," a scientific theory which claims that humans had an aquatic stage in our evolutionary past. It claims that while human beings evolved into terrestrial humans, our aquatic relatives turned into something similar to a mermaid.
As recently as May, when the documentary first aired on Animal Planet, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released the following statement:
Despite Animal Planet being upfront that the mermaid body found story was fictional, many people still believed it to be true. This prompted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to release in an official statement that mermaids, in fact, do not exist.
The NOAA said all the hype around the mermaid body found is entirely false and can be credited to the Animal Planet show.
