Charlie Chaplin Silent Movies Era
Because of his socialist sympathies, Charlie Chaplin forced to leave America in the 1950s and re-settle in Europe
As the world's most recognisable silent movie star, it's no surprise Charles Spencer Chaplin is included in the records. But the entry for British-born comedy actor gives his birthplace as Paris rather than London. It also describes him as 5ft 4in tall with brown hair and blue eyes, and notes he's a writer and producer as well as an actor.
He first took to the stage in his native UK as a child performer, but it was in Hollywood he became a household name as one of the most creative and influential stars of the era.
He would spend more than 75 years in the entertainment industry, lasting long after silent movies had died out. He was almost as famous for his controversial personal life and political viewpoints as he was for his film-making.
Because of his socialist sympathies, Charlie Chaplin forced to leave America in the 1950s and re-settle in Europe, later making a film called A King In New York which satirised the politicial persecution of the McCarthy Era.
