China Launches 3D TV Channels

China launched a three-dimensional-based television channel. China's first 3D television channel aired on Sunday, January 1, 2012.

The television channel operated by China Central Television (CCTV) and five local television stations in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Shenzhen. Chinese society that has the 3D television can watch the 3D effect on their glass display.

3D TV channel will air for 13.5 hours a day, from 10.30 am until 24.00 local time. 3D content will be broadcast for 4.5 hours, the program will be repeated twice a day.

3D channel will be officially launched at the Chinese New Year which falls on January 23. 3D program to be shown include sport, art, cartoons, and movies.

"The launch 3D channel  experiment is a significant step for the development of television in China," said Cai Fuchao, Head of Administration of Radio, Television, and China Film as quoted by Chinadaily.

He added that this new television channels can provide hundreds of billions of yuan of income if 500 million televisions in China was replaced with a 3D device.

China is not the first country to launch 3D television channels. Previously, Japan, South Korea, and India has launched a similar service.
