9 Things To Do While PSN Down

PlayStation Network, often abbreviated as PSN, is an online multiplayer gaming and digital media delivery service provided/run by Sony Computer Entertainment for use with the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable video game consoles. As of April 19,2011, there are over 70 million registered PlayStation Network accounts worldwide and over 1.4 billion downloads. PlayStation Network is currently offline for maintenance and will return soon, Sony needs to rebuild their system and may take longer than they expected.

We are now entering the 3rd day of the Playstation Network  (PSN) Outage of 2011, and PS3 gamers around the world seem to be starting to lose their minds without their Killzone 3 online and DC Universe Online amongst others. Here are some things you can do to pass the time:

Sony Playstation Network Down

  1. Play your PS3 games – The games will still play offline and now is a good time to finish the single player campaigns and modes. Your trophies will still be awarded to you, but remember to sync them when the service returns.
  2. Play Xbox Live – It’s still running and it’s a free gold weekend. Oh such bad timing for Sony and PSN.
  3. Watch all the the James Bond 007s on Netflix streaming – Yes, Netflix streaming still seems to be working, at least on my PS3 it is, though you will be prompted to sign-in and that Netflix needs you to sign-in, the work around is to launch Netflix, then sign-in let it fail then press O netflix will then load, let it load, you might be prompted to login in again, if you are try to login let it fail then hit O again, at that point you should then get full control of Netflix. Right now I’m watching 007 Moonraker in HD thanks the the Netflix/Epix deal!
  4. Clean your shit – It’s Spring, clean up your room and throw out what you don’t need/use, your mom will like it.
  5. Go buy an Air Hogs Havock Heli indoor helicopter – These things are wicked fun, we got 3 of them now.
  6. Extend Earth Day to a second day – Go play some board games or other activities that don’t use electricity. Earth Day was the 22nd but you can help save energy other days as well.
  7. Go to the gym – You got nothing else to do get off your ass and go to the gym. Work off that Mountain Dew gut before you re-implant yourself on the couch.
  8. Back-up your PCs – One thing no one does regularly is back-up and clean out their PCs. It’s a good day to go through your files back-up all the important things like pictures and music, and get rid of some of that crap thats taking up hard drive space. If you really want to do a good job, backup everything and do a clean install of your OS, nothing is better then a nice clean PC.
  9. Find other forms of video games - Fire up the PC and check out some other games you might have been missing, I for one will be putting in some time into Civ V and Tropico, I can spend hours playing these strategy games.
On April 20, 2011, Sony turned off PSN and Qriocity services after an "external intrusion" on the systems. The group Anonymous was unofficially attributed to the cause of the downtime which they denied. On April 21, it was posted on an official PlayStation blog that Sony were investigating the cause of downtime and that it may take 1-2 days. On April 23, Sony stated they were "re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure" citing that the task is time-consuming. No date of completion was given.
